Beagle / Basset Hound / Mixed : : Female (spayed) : : Adult
We originally rescued Dayla in July 2006. She came to us from Georgia where she had been part of an animal cruelty investigation and, we believe, was used for breeding. She had a type of hernia from overbreeding which was successfully repaired at the University of Florida Veterinary School . After TBBR had taken care of her medical needs she was originally adopted out in November 2006 as a sweet and playful girl.
We will never know the circumstances that would have caused Dayla to be abandoned, but she was found as a stray in rural Hillsborough County Florida. Her life was saved because of the microchip that the manufacturer was able to trace back to TBBR. Her owners had moved and impossible to contact.
Dayla, at least recently, had not been well cared for and animal services agreed to release her to TBBR after only 4 days so we could get her examined by our vet, especially since she had tested positive for heartworms. Her first bath turned the shower black and you could see where she had been chewing herself raw and bloody. When we looked in her mouth her large canine teeth were worn flat and several of her smaller teeth had been worn to the gums. Many times this is caused by chewing on a cage for a long long time. It took 10 Q-tips to clean her ears and, although they had trimmed her nails at the shelter, the one dew claw they missed was about 1 inch long. The skin on her belly was very warm and had a red rash. She had several hot spots and pustules all over her little body. But she ate like a Beagle and was sound asleep as soon as we put her in her crate. We gave her another bath the next day with medicated calming shampoo and conditioner.
During her vet visit Dayla was treated for her heartworm disease, had 2 small teeth removed, was found to have an old large inguinal hernia, which allowed her intestines to protrude, the x-rays showed she had a fracture to a small bone in her right rear leg and she received medication for her skin condition.
Dayla weighs in at 23 pounds and when you pick her up she is so relaxed it is like picking up a water balloon. She just wants to sit on your lap or lie next to you and be petted. She had no problem with the other dogs at our home. After all that she has been through Dayla is still the sweet little girl that we originally rescued in 2006.
So Dayla is giving us another chance to find her a new loving home and that is exactly what we shall do! Could it be yours?
