Bambi II's story is certainly one of survival.  She was found as a stray in rural Hillsborough County.  She was critically ill when found and there was much doubt about whether she would even survive.  With supportive care she would improve and seem to recover and just when we thought she was doing well she would get sick again, stumbling around, not eating and acting confused.  Her mystery illness had all the doctors stumped, even the specialists.  Finally TBBR's terrific vet had the idea that Bambi may be suffering from liver shunt.  She was tested for this condition and sure enough, that's what this poor girl had.  This is a condition where there is one or more large blood vessels carrying blood around the liver instead of through it - the result is that the toxins are not filtered from the blood and instead are allowed to bulid up in her system making her deathly ill.  The amazing Dr. Callum Hay took Bambi to surgery and she did fabulous!  He was able to successfully clip the offending artery which he said was one of the largest liver shunts he has ever seen!  This congenital condition is typically diagnosed in much younger puppies due to the early onset of symptoms but because of Bambi's lack of veterinary care, or any care at all for that matter, she, by some miracle, survived long enough to find her way to TBBR and was successfully diagnosed and treated.  $5000 later Bambi II is fully recovered and has turned out to be a sweet little beagle girl who is learning how to be a family member.  It was so worth it and we are grateful to everyone who donated toward her medical care.  She is just precious and has a lovely personality.  She does great with other dogs and even the cat in her foster home.  She is however, still a puppy and just when you take your eye off her she is off working hard to get into something.  Thanks to her foster parents, Jan & Kevin, Bambi II is well on her way to being house trained and sleeps in her crate at night.  She will need to have her bile acids tested once a year to ensure that she is still doing well but we expect nothing but a happy and healthy future for this lucky girl.  Bambi II has stolen the heart of everyone that has met her, so don't miss the opportunity to make her part of your family!
