Gus-Gus came in from Hardee County in late July. He had been adopted by a family in April of 2017 and then abandoned in the woods, and found again by the same shelter that originally had him! He could be bitter and broken by the cruel act, but we have not found that to be the case.
Gus-Gus is as loving and kind as any dog we have ever met! (not to mention handsome!) He warmed up to his foster family right away, and has been enjoying his backyard and freedom. We don’t believe he needs a backyard to be happy, as he’s in a good mood even when it’s rainy and we stay inside most of the day.
Gus-Gus definitely has had a baseline training at some point, as he “sits” and “comes” for treats almost every time. He’s pretty good about “come”ing when called, even without a treat. He doesn’t voluntarily go into his crate, unless it’s meal time, but has no problem once he settles down.
He has been sleeping in his crate with no problems or accidents. The first couple of nights he beagle howled for the first ~5 minutes, but once we turned off all the lights he calmed down. Other than that, he’s mostly quiet and calm.
I consider Gus-Gus house trained. The first day he peed a couple of times indoors, but I chalk that up to nerves, because we haven’t had an accident since (over a week ago). He now goes over to the backdoor, sits, and looks at us if he needs to go outside. He likes to follow you when you get up, and also tries to wiggle through doors when you open them.
Sometimes if you’re not looking he likes to jump up and see what’s on the table or counters. He does know he’s not supposed to, but can’t help himself! We are working on that.
Overall Gus-Gus has been a great foster dog, and we know he’ll be super happy to find his forever home. He will absolutely fit right in with adults and other dogs, but we haven’t seen him interact with children, cats, or any other animals.
